The citizens of Nigeria are tired of the activities of SARS in their country. On Thursday, October 8, concerned citizens of Nigeria especially musicians, public figures came out to protest and demonstrated to the government to help end SARS activities.
SARS is one of the 14 units in the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department which was established to detain, investigate and prosecute people involved in crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of crimes in Nigeria.
But the story is otherwise. This made citizens not to be happy about their activities in the country. Just last week a young guy was shot when he was returning from a football center.
Just some few days back a press release by the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria states that and i quote;
”All FSARS, STS, IRT & other Tactical police Squads operating at Federal, Zonal & Command levels are hereby BANNED from carrying out routine patrols & other conventional low-risk duties – stop & search duties, checkpoints, roadblocks, traffic checks, etc – WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT”
According to some citizens, most especially the youth, they thought this Press Release will bring calm among the youth and the FSARS in Nigeria but what they called police brutality is still ongoing. This made prominent and well recognize people in the country to rise up to protest.
Artistes like Falz who always sing and talk about the bad deeds happening in Nigeria and other musicians like Runtown were seen on the street of lekki and Lagos police headquarters. They actually join to support and express their displeasure in the ongoing issues of SARS activities which is destroying the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
On twitter the hashtag #EndSarsProtest #EndSars #EndSARSImmediately was trending since October 4. some twitter users were hailing celebrities like Tacha, Falz, Runtown for being in the midst of the ordinary people on the street to protest. They hailed Falz and Runtown as the true son of the land.
Other twitter users also weren’t happy with celebrities like Wizkid, Davido, Burnaboy and others who always come to social media to talk about these SARS activities but never came out on the street to protest.
As a citizen of Nigeria, do you think the protestors are right?
