Arsenal snatch dramatic stoppage-time win over Leicester with two late goals
Arsenal secured a thrilling win over Leicester with two stoppage-time goals on Saturday afternoon.
A 94th-minute own goal by Wilfred Ndidi and a close-range finish from Kai Havertz in the 99th minute crushed Leicester’s hopes of an unlikely point at the Emirates Stadium. The Foxes had fought back from a two-goal deficit in the second half.
Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring for Arsenal, converting Jurrien Timber’s cross in the first half. Martinelli then set up Leandro Trossard, who made it 2-0 just before halftime.
Leicester, who had only one touch in the Arsenal box before the break, pulled one back just a minute into the second half when James Justin’s header, from Facundo Buonanotte’s free-kick, deflected off Havertz and into the net.
Justin scored again just after the hour mark, volleying in Ndidi’s cross to equalize with a stunning effort that beat David Raya via the post.
Despite Leicester’s comeback, Arsenal regrouped and forced two excellent saves from Mads Hermansen, who denied Havertz and Trossard in quick succession after a defensive error.
However, a deflected Trossard shot off Ndidi and a late Havertz strike sealed the win for the Gunners.
This victory brings Arsenal level on points with Manchester City, with Liverpool having the chance to leapfrog both if they defeat Wolves later in the day.
